Session 2012-04

WDTS
The results of this fourth session for this year are published on the site whisky-distilleries.info.
Hi .,

Please accept my apologies... Tehe preceding mail has been sent a bit to quick and contains some errors, especially in the links to the results which pointed to the French pages of the site. Here is a correct version of this mailing. Again, all my apologies.

WDTS: the results of the fourth session are available online now ...
This is the second last session before the summer break.

The results of this fourth session.

  1. Ledaig, aged 31 years - Ian MacLeod, Chieftain/s Choice
  2. Glen Grant, Thirty Eight - Wilson & Morgan
  3. Glen Ord, 1999 Bourbon Hogshead, cask 110013 - Malts of Scotland
  4. Glen Scotia, Twenty - Wilson & Morgan
  5. 30 years old Speyside, 4th edition - Master of Malt
  6. Single Highland Mlat - Eilan Gillan - 4 years old

Like usually, this session shows great differences in tastes. I would like to point out again that the WDTS are completely blind, and the expectation of the different tasters can of course have an influence on their tasting notes. And once again the bottles proposed were very different, from cheap young single malts to venerable bottles costing more than 200 euro. No wonder so that the 4 years old experience of Eilan Gillan surprised some tasters who gave it less points than deserved. It is always difficut to judge a bottle for itselve in a range of 6 samples. How can we avoid the influence of comparison with the other bottles in competition when attributing points...
I would like to comment a bit about this bottle, and to salute the courage of the producer of this bottle (Cognacs Lépold Gourmel), as they knew that competitors would play in a complete other range. They like to get a feed-back form the market, and this is the ultimate goal of the WTDS. And looking on the results, this young cheap bottle (4 years, 30 euros) gets some very nice results, even if it was completely lowered by some taster.
The winner from this session was sent to us by a French retailer, proving the interest that retailers can have in the WDTS experience. This increases their sales, because I would not understand why a small retailer sends us a bottle costing about 230 euros (one of the most expensive ones in the WDTS) it this was not the case.
Other bottles were sent to us by now familiar sponsors: Wilson & Morgan, Malts of Scotland, Master of Malt.
A great session, once more.
  • The fifth session is running and the results will be published in early July.
  • The summer period is not favorable for the tasting, we will pause until early September.

Session 2012-04

WDTS

  1. Ledaig, agec 31 years - Ian McLeod, Chieftain's Choice
  2. Glen Grant, Thirty Eight - Wilson & Morgan
  3. Glen Ord, 1999 Bourbon Hogshead, cask 110013 - Malts of Scotland
  4. Glen Scotia, Twenty - Wilson & Morgan
  5. 30 years old Speyside, 4th edition - Master of Malts
  6. Single Highland Malt - Eilan Gillan - 4 years old
