Session 2012-03

The results of this third session for this year are published on the site
Hi .,

WDTS: how it works ...
Here is the second edition of the newsletter following the publication of the results of a session WDTS. I received several questions following the publication of the previous session, so I take this opportunity to explain a bit how these blind tasting sessions actually work.
Producers, importers, independent bottlers, etc. ... send us bottles they would like to be reviewed. As soon as we got enough bottles (each session includes six different whiskys), tasting kits are prepared and sent to the tasters who registered for the session. The samples include only the number of the session and the number of the bottle. Within 4 weeks  the jury members return their comments that are published on the site Each note is accompanied by a rating on a scale of 100. These notes are systematically translated (either by the taster if he
masters the other language, or retrospectively before publication). Given the large number of translations that the WDTS publication implies, it is difficult to do this work in a purely manual way. Google Translate is in this case a great help, although in many cases it is necessary to correct serious mistakes. And we are not immune to translation errors.

The results of this third session.

  1. Bowmore - 1989, Bourbon Hogshead - Malts of Scotland
  2. Blended Malt - 12 years old Islay - Master of Malt
  3. Aultmore - Twenty - Wilson & Morgan
  4. Linkwood - 1987, Bourbon Hogshead - Malts of Scotland
  5. Pulteney - 11 years, Le Puits à Whisky - Jean Boyer
  6. Clynelish - 13 years - The Maltman (Meadowside)
Once again, the tradition has not wavered. Jury members tastes are varied and this time the average score achieved by the six bottles varies between 87 and 81. The prize for best value for money is once again a bottle produced by John Boyer in the series "Le puits à Whisky" (the Whisky Well). Installed at many wine shops in France, this system allows the sale of bulk quality whisky, but at a reasonable price. This series does obviously not focus on exceptional whiskies as evidenced by the rankings, but they are always of high quality.
The quality of whiskys offered by the German bottler Malts of Scotland is confirmed each time again. As the popularity of many whisky lovers for productions of the island of Islay.
Master of Malt has once again surprised us with a blend of relatively young whiskys (12years) from various distilleries of Islay. This bottle was a real favorite for some members of the jury.
A little known distillery and an atypical whisky for Wilson & Morgan. One of those whiskys you love or hate. A whisky that comes largely off the beaten path. Of 20 participants, this Aultmore was placed at the top by 8 of them but against three placed it in the very bottom. A very significant result for such an atypical whisky.
Finally, the Maltman offered us a 13 years old Clynelish. Also atypical. I bet this is not the best bottle produced by Meadowside.

  • The fourth session is running and the results will be published on June, 3.
  • There will be one more session before the summer and results will be published in late June. The summer period is not favorable for the tasting, we will pause until early September.
